As the title suggests, lets allow the ability of users on the website to color their names like their names in-game.

The site will allow people to set a ‘nickname’ which could possibly be colored.

first thing to do is to allow Unicode, or at least ASCII names, ie., at least allow ‘/’.

‘/’ is allowed on WordPress “nicknames” (which is different from the user name). It would be awesome to have the WP nicknames used on Discourse as well.
