This is the first Idea I got and I think it could be great to have it.

Here’s the current thoughts we got on the board:

1. A story for both teams. (Customizable stories, so the server makers or the mod makers can modify it on their willing.)

(With a .txt or a .cfg)

2. There could be quests / daily quests / quests that we get for specific events (Like when we reach a specific spot we get a challenge for that zone.)

3. Maybe a model generator could be useful. (I know it's possible to make a model generator. I already saw one someday but can't remember... sry...)

The model generator could have prebuilt models that are used for specific parts on the desired model. It could be a panel like when we create our characters in games like Sims

4. (A panel with buttons to switch between the pieces models.)

It could be great to customize the aliens with some textures incase of a model modifying since we can’t modify too much model parts on the aliens if we want it to still look good…
But the humans should be easily modifiable. (The modification panel could also look like Halo’s one.)

wtshit is this? yet another RPG idea thread? such has been proposed many times before, and has probably been formulated in minds even many more times.

despite that this thread aspires to specify something, it actually does nothing. i’ll explain:

wtf does that mean ? that u could warez the The Da Vinci Code, put it in story.txt (in raw text format), and have the server automagically serve a game mode based on that book ?1

1 once upon a time, i actually tried putting „uber magic” into New Text Document.txt, and renaming it to epic.exe. i’m sure i recall correctly that the uber magic exe did work then. xD

no shit, sherlock, that’s what an RPG is about, and even much more; no need to restate what’s obvious from the title (for example, something specific would be worthy to mention).

so that each user could customize how his/her player looks like? what does that have to do with the essence of an RPG game mode ?

For the txt, I meant that they could customize what the story is.

For the quests, I just wrote it incase. Because some rpg makers forget to make them.

For the model customization, I never said it has to do something with the essence.
I said that because it could be nice to actually be able to customize our character.
Which would also help with making cinematics and suchs. (If we use AI and such. (The AI can be great when done correctly tho.))

Anyway, I just wrote an idea. I never said it had to be done.
I’ve already talked with sparky about that idea. (before posting it.)
And I’ve told him I’d make an exemple to show him how it could look like.

Also, this game mode wouldn’t be for the “initial release” it would (maybe) be a feature available someday.

A rpg gamemode could bring few “RPG” players. And then increase trem’s community.

Anyway. Don’t have more time for today. Sorry if I didn’t make few points clear. (I’m still learning…)

the PROBLEM is that it’s a waste of time to write, and have others read, whole posts about amateur thoughts that could be essentially described in few words: „RPG mod”.

Author was cool but he exploded or something. I had a Level 23 Summoner and played constantly on my old P3 until the server died. RIP

The big issue is that doing the same kind of thing for Tremulous would mean it would never be balanced, so it’d have to be dumb fun.

No, that is wrong, the Evil Genius Think Tank category was never meant to “quarantine” crazy ideas, but to encourage their creation and exploration, and thus are encouraged in all other areas of the forums, provided they are on topic, and follow the community guidelines.

When I posted this idea I asked sparky where to put it and he told me to put it here for now.
So I didn’t really thought I’d need to move it someday…

For the balancing part, it could be done actually. Depends on which version we make the rpg.
If we make it on 1.3 it will most likely be more balanced than it would right now.

I do however understand that you guys think this is a bad idea.
But I’d still not throw it to garbage.
Because we want more players on tremulous, right.
But what about the RPG players?

being an entirely different game mode — heck, it may even primarily be not „aliens (players) vs humans (players)”, but „players vs non-player entities” or even „player groups vs other player groups vs non-player entities” —, mechanics could be specialized for such gameplay, perhaps significantly different.

i didn’t say that. i said that it was not worthy of such a long post.

It would be interesting to see someone develop an open-world server/map, and slowly integrate RPG elements into the QVM, but with the current playerbase I don’t think it’s worth the time and the work.

RPG players play RPGs. Tremulous is not a RPG. How about we try to attract people who play FPS by making it a better, up-to-date shooter?

You are forgetting about rts, that has been one of the appeals to many players that trem attracted over pure fps games.

RPGs are only fun when A. a lot of people play it B. there is a lot of content for soloing, most RPG players are content whores. The map would have to be the size of epic except it’d actually be filled out with a shitton of stuff. The quests & co can be handled easily, so can perks/skill trees, viable bots are another matter, so is the server performance required to run the thing constantly. Also, there would need to be no time limit obviously. The development of such a mod would require to have already quite some activity on the game as is.

Maybe its something that could be thought of when we reach a higher community.

This is the kind of mod that requires to have a bunch of mappers and coders collaborating. Just the map itself would take forfuckingever if you’re just one or two people. The code part would be less complicated/long to do but it’s still a lot of work. If you are alone working atleast 2 or 3 hours on the map every day it would take something like 2 years or more to finish a map this size. Not to mention the NPCs, mobs, etc. that you have to place on the map once it’s done.

The idea is very very interesting though.

It would require creating loot tables, armour sets, weapons, “instances” (I can think of a few ways to simulate instanced areas, even though it’d still be a lot less efficient), mobs, making an efficient AI which would be different between every mob/boss, just balancing and modeling everything is a bitch to do given how rare modelers are, and that’s barely scraping the surface of what such a mod would imply. I can’t really see it ever happen on tremulous to be honest, but that would be the absolute shit. Also if they are planning to have a shitton of players at any time on the server, it might get expansive to host.

I think the idea is original but very tricky, If I want to play an rpg I just close trem and play diablo or something like that, and remember that maps in trem have a limit (ehem epic5) you can squeez all that npcs, mobs, armour, players into it, but hey, if epic5 is laggy already for some players, imagine it filled with all those things. (And I say epic 5 because a normal map couldnt be rpg worthy, amybe zelda world, but even though it is small)

Shitty use of the renderer. Pretty sure epic5’s vis leaves are nigged up. If you have an actual environment with walls and proper vis the renderer will only display what you’re supposed to see, instead of the whole entire 2000miles of map.
